Let’s Play Global Thermonuclear War—Church Edition Part 2
This clear reference to the movie War Games (1983) should be rather obvious. The point of the movie was that when faced with nuclear war, the best move was not to play. Of course, the movie was made while Ronald Reagan was President. Liberals hated Reagan and thought him a warmongering “cowboy” for opposing the Soviet Union; a government that many of them admired. War Games got a very lengthy standing ovation when it premiered at the Canne Film Festival.
While invoking War Games might seem a stretch to some, my conclusion when analyzing my current conflict with my church was that there is a life lesson to be found in the idea that sometimes avoiding a confrontation is best. Anyone that is happily married knows what I mean.
I originally drafted this blog just a few hours before appearing before my church’s board. If you find me changing time tenses, that is probably why.

In their particular parlance, this group is called “The Session”. They are the judicial body of my local congregation. These are the guys that meet out justice as they see fit. Twice in the last year they have excommunicated members for adultery and followed it up by declaring the other spouse fit to remarry. Except for politicians and country music singers, adultery is usually viewed as something bad. Having this group taking an interest in my love life is not a good sign.
I have had friends excommunicated from their churches for dating women from the wrong or unapproved church denomination before. I have seen abuse of heavy-handed dealings with folks for just being honest that they wanted to leave and go to a different church. I have even seen pronouncements of excommunication for people that never attended services and were certainly never church members. My wife and I have also been beaten up by churches that we have attended in the past. I made a vow that I would never again yield any part of my life to one of these judicial boards or to a pastor in any church. I will never voluntarily put myself on any path that might ever lead to church discipline or excommunication, never ever!
I repeatedly told these guys that I am perfectly willing to discuss my relationship with my girlfriend over a meal at any local watering hole but that I do not want to appear before “The Session.” If I’m called before a judicial body to give an account of my personal life, then I’m in trouble. That seems obvious to me.
They keep saying that they “have a few questions” for me. Hey guys, you know where I live, you have my phone number, and email address. I’m retired and don’t have much of a life so I’m rather available for a casual lunch or dinner.
But No. It must be ASAP, and it must be before this body; then they say I have nothing to worry about! Guys, I wasn’t born yesterday. This cover story is not credible. If they want to speak with me, the church is having a Christmas potluck in a few days, why not ask me your questions there?
If I go to this meeting and then answer their questions, then obviously they will then draw a conclusion from the information that I provide, and then the next step is a determination. Determination is another word for rendering judgement. Any judgment issued will then include a follow-up to their conclusion to see if I’m obeying them or going a different way. If I go a different way, then it is implied that they will then jerk my chain and I will again have to appear before them. Thus, like most things in life, my appearance is not a destination but the beginning of a process with no clear or predefined endpoint. This sounds like politics to me.
Oh, what about Matthew 18: 15-17 about going to your brother if he has a fault. Well, that doesn’t apply. First, because I haven’t offended anybody in my congregation, unless not liking me dating someone is a crime, and second because there is an exception to this biblical mandate in the Book of Discipline. If “The Session” originates the charge against someone then the process in Matthew is not required.
Also, did you know that there is no Fifth Amendment in the Bible? Yep, you can be hung on the basis of your own words. So even if they don’t have anything on me when I walk in the door, they can hang me on the basis of what I say in their presence. Thus, the command to appear before them is a fishing license to find a charge to hit me with. To appear is to grant them a blank check to find a charge even where none existed before.
Oh, on a previous post on this subject, an anonymous comment was made that I did not allow on the blog just because it was not signed. Said comment quoted a verse in Proverbs. I would like to comment on that verse now.
Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. Proverbs 11:14.
First, the verse is directed at leaders of men, would it be a stretch to think this is advice from one king (Solomon) to another (like maybe his sons). But let’s allow that all folks need counselors and see if it applies in this situation.
Are the men in my church that are on “The Session” my trusted friends that really know me and what’s on my heart?
Is this situation a meeting of equals?
Do I see these guys as my circle of counselors?
Nope. Just because someone knows my name does not make them my friend. My wife may have felt that way about everyone that she met, but I do not. I’ve had a handful of true friends in my life; probably about ten individuals. With the exception of the Sith Lord, who dumped me when I was no longer useful to him, I’ve kept the rest of them in my life. True, I don’t see my friends every day or even every year, but our lives are linked, and I trust them and our relationship goes on. When we are together, we pick up right where we left off the last time that we were together.
There is only one guy in my congregation that I am friendly with, and he is not on this board. He also does not know, or even want to know, all the nitty gritty details of my life. We have some things in common and as a result, spend time together. I would describe him as a casual friend.
This is not to say that I dislike the other men in my church; it’s that we have never gotten to know each other very well. We are not actively part of each other’s lives. It is something between presumption and hubris for them to claim to act as my counselors when I appear before them assembled as “The Session.”
No, in “The Session,” they are my betters, and I am the inferior person. This is not a meeting of Christian brothers, equals, or friends. By its very nature, this is an adversarial meeting.
When I walked into the meeting today, I greeted the four people in attendance and shook their hands. The guy from Boise didn’t make the meeting but after about a ten-minute delay, the other fellow finally logged in on Zoom. Once all five people were assembled, the meeting was opened. I was invited to join them at the table, but I did not. Instead, I announced that I was resigning my membership. One of the people then quipped, but you have to appear here because you’re a member. Then I said, “I’m not doing this” and left.
Just so you know, I spent the better part of a week crafting this long speech about my relationship with my girl and all the pertinent details that I was going to offer as a defense and I scrapped it completely. Yep, nine pages of reasoning and airtight logic that will never see the light of day unless I post it separately (which I currently have no plans to do).
So why just quit?
First, they are wrong and out of line. While true, I know I can never convince them of that or this blog post would never exist.
Second, I would rather part as casual friends than adversaries or combatants.
Third, this is a really small town, and we all need to continue to live here after this is over. Folks, most guys living here won’t believe it, but there are high schools in other states that have a bigger population than this town. 2,300 is not a lot of people to be rubbing shoulders with on a daily basis.
Fourth, why should I stay in a group that is hell bent on stringing me up? If I dodge the gallows this time, what will prevent them from trying it again in the future? If not me, then who will they go after next?
Lastly, the closer I got to this meeting, the more the scares of my previous dust-up in a Presbyterian church began to open. Unresolved wounds are the ones you carry the deepest hoping to suppress them. When they burst forth and the new situation is pumping vast amounts of salt into them, the more the pain is renewed and intensified. This steeled my resolve that I would not willingly enter into another opportunity for a church’s leadership to sit in judgement of me. Were my wife still alive, I believe she would support me in this feeling (of course, we’re here because she is not).
This whole thing is so stupid. The church has already lost about one third of their membership this year (this is a conservative estimate) and they want to cap off the year with my scalp too. They are bleeding members and money. Maybe they need to get a clue that some things are not right. Again, they can never be convinced of that and it’s not my job.
In summary, had they come to me as a fellow brother in Christ and not treated me as their inferior, I might be there next Sunday. They have wasted the greatest advantage that they once had, goodwill and trust. Sadly, that has been laid waste because they were too proud to ask me out for a casual meal and then speak their mind.
Let’s Play Global Thermonuclear War—Church Edition Part 1
Yep, me having a girlfriend is too much for the board at my church. I have been summoned because they are “concerned.” Please understand that this is not a casual chat. No, all the voting members are scheduled to attend. Two members, including one that lives almost 400 miles away, are scheduled to attend via Zoom.
I had asked for an informal setting, like maybe over a burger and beverage of your choice but learned that was not an option. If chatting is all this meeting is about, then a casual setting should be in order; however, I have been led to believe that they have other plans. I was assured by one board member, “I’m not up for excommunication just yet” or words to that effect. It was implied that lesser punishments were the likely outcome.
I also asked, why not meet after Christmas? Why the urgency? I was told sorry; we need to do this now.
Given my 35 plus years of experience in and around California Republican politics and the CRA, I know when you are about to reenact the Ides of March. Oh, FYI, in religious politics, it is called “churchmanship” not church politics.
I have had about ten days of waiting for this confrontation. In that time, I have gone over the likely issues that might be raised. Frankly, I don’t see any grounds that can be raised to summon me there. I have tried keeping three board members, including the pastor in the loop of what is happening, specifically for the purpose of avoiding this very action. Clearly my request/promise to him “to give me the grace to get through this and everything will be ok” has not been honored.
I already have a good idea of the likely issues that will be raised. Since June I have been probing various members of the board on their thoughts on various issues that I expected to encounter while hunting for a wife; this was long before I met my future new bride.
What they don’t understand is that I am working through the plan that was formulated about the time my wife was buried in May. Like any plan, once the battle ensued, field adjustments were necessary, but the plan has gone forward, and a successful conclusion is within sight.
I have always been looking for a wife. I have only been looking for marriage minded women, not a quick romp in the sack, or a movie night date. As mentioned, many times on my posts about dating, as a group, American women in the 40 years and older category are a mess and mostly a toxic bunch. I don’t want to finance their mistakes in love, student loans, credit cards, etc.
Zero people that know me or my wife have offered me a single name, no matter how ridiculous, to ask out for a date; but when I fend for myself and pick a nice Christian woman all hell breaks loose. Clearly, they don’t know of anybody or I think, as much as everyone is trying to be in my business now, that I would have heard from them. FYI it’s too late now, I found my next wife.
Two more things have been bubbling out about the church fathers wanting to make me an offer that I can’t refuse.
One is related to the idea that it’s too soon to get married again. Says who? Oh yeah, a bunch of married people gladly giving a single guy the advice not to get married. Guess they don’t want me to suffer by being married like they are. This tells me that they aren’t too happy about having a bride. Just sayin’.
Sorry I loved being married and would do it again in a heartbeat. I find it really sad that Christian people have such a hangup on the idea that marriage can’t be fun. Biblically, it is our proper role in the universe so why not enjoy it? (Can you tell that Charlie Kirk is not influential in these circles?)
Second, right before my road trip to the Philippines, my pastor hands me a tract on grief. If I didn’t know better, I would say he was talking to my mom. I read said booklet last night. It covered no new ground or anything that I hadn’t heard before. One nugget in there was the timeframe for people grieving: three months to one year. As stated previously, I have known that Sheryl would die for four years before it finally happened. My wife and I countered down the last time we will get to have a birthday, Christmas, New Years, Valentines Day, etc. The private hell that I went through was horrible and I don’t wish that experience on anybody, but to deny that I have been dealing with the loss is beyond stupid and borderline evil.
The richest irony in all this is that my attendance at this particular church was due to my wife. Going to this church was her idea and literally the only thing left in my life that we used to do together. Now the church wants to take that away from me too, in part because according to them, I did not grieve her properly! All I have left in my weekly activity that I shared with my wife is being forcibly removed from me at this Wednesday (tomorrow) meeting. Ironically, by the church where she wanted to worship and set down roots. WTF?
I have easily lost over 40 hours of sleep in the last week trying to find a way to solve this mess. I finally settled on a solution today. I won’t tip my hand as to what I chose but I have peace about Wednesday’s meeting.
My biggest frustration is that I like many of the people involved in this ill-conceived intervention. They are about nine months too late to have a talk with me. Just because they mostly left me alone when I was grieving, and therefore didn’t witness it in vivid detail, doesn’t mean it never happened. Lastly, none of them have walked in my shoes but dare to know better! Really? I thought the Good Book covered that topic too.
Weighing in on Williams Blog
Lyric above were used to introduce the gossip segment of the old TV show Hee Haw. They seem appropriate when introducing a post about getting into someone else’s business.
Sadness. Anger. Pathetic. These are words I won’t use to call out the losers who are criticizing William and his dating situation. It’s a symptom of something else going on in their lives that they act like that. It’s disgusting. Actually, I’ll quote Don Corleone “act like a man!”
However, I would ask William to describe the folks who are treating him this way. I can say without much risk of being wrong. They are, and I quote my Filipino friend, “Pale, Stale, and likely male.” I would expand that universe to females as well. It’s the older generation. Oh, and they are all likely married to boot.
There is a biblical passage “He who is without sin cast the first stone.” The way I interpret it, a group of sinners (we are all sinners) standing around the rock pile and no one tosses a rock. Unfortunately, the way it is now is a group of older folks grabbing multiple rocks and chucking them because they can (since they went to church Sunday.)
Many people use the term ______ is the greatest invention since sliced bread. Well, that generation actually invented something better than sliced bread; they put wheels on a goal post!
The point of this blog is “what is grief?” And how does one grieve?
I have an uncle in my life, he lost his wife to cancer as did William. He had 2 very young girls. He spiraled and became a full-on alcoholic, lost custody of said kids. He claimed he was “grieving.” I guess that would be an acceptable outcome for William? Not the Wiliam I know.
Truth is William has been grieving his wife, it’s been ongoing. I made an effort to call him weekly on Thursdays while his wife was undergoing treatment. It’s what a friend does. I am not married; I have no kids. I have no idea what the loss of a spouse is like. I simply called to give Wiliam a reprieve for a few minutes, a friend should do that. Just because someone has passed doesn’t mean the grieving didn’t start sooner. There were a lot of LASTS. Now William is having a lot of firsts, as in first ______ without said wife. I cannot imagine it’s easy.
To those who are shooting their arrows at William, allow me to ask, what is proper grieving? A customer of mine who lost his wife started frequenting strip clubs right after, is that ok? Is it one life one wife? Someone I went to college with is on wife #3, is that ok? Why is it not ok to chart your own course in life? Doesn’t everyone deserve to be happy?
When did we start comparing ourselves to everyone? Why is it that the nuclear family has to be husband and wife plus two kids of opposite gender? It’s an easy answer; we are now a Hallmark country. Better be married post college, better have a couple kids. The commercials on the TV put it right out there, gotta be a family during this season, single people be damned. Valentine’s Day is worse. The ads are basically saying it’s time to f**k and make babies and if you are not doing that you are worthless.
The bottom line is William is doing what makes him happy. He has a way in life and the path he is on is his. I am happy for him and everyone else should be too. He loved his wife, full stop; no one is happy she is gone, or how she was gone. Some may say war is hell, cancer is hell.
Let William live his life. Live and let live is a motto I live by. I am happy for everyone and everybody, do your thing, do what you do. I don’t care if you’re banging some bleach blonde bimbo or some brunette. I do care if you are banging Jennifer Aniston as that’s Troll’s piece of ass!
My biggest concern is when did it become a thing to “punch down” rather than up. Sure, you may have a wife, kids etc. Why can you not respect folks who do not? Maybe it’s a personal choice, but why? They do this because it makes them feel better about themselves. Jealousy is another factor. The 90-day guy loves to remind me of this every Thanksgiving and Christmas season. He isn’t religious but he always says I am missing something. It’s a shot at me being single. It’s his way of trying to push a narrative. Trust me, he is bitter. He has told me he watches porn. The jokes he tells about having sex with sheep and goats tells me what I need to know. He views his wife as a child maker who is past her prime.

If You Can’t Be Helpful Please Stay Out of My Business
This is my personal blog, and I need to vent. I have written numerous posts (probably about two dozen) over the last six months that I have not actually posted. But I’m gonna break from that practice and stick this on the record.
As stated previously, my wife died in April. After much searching, I found a woman worth pursuing all the way to the alter. Instead of being happy for me, many people have made it their life’s work to start attacking me. Sadly, this included people in my family and church.
One vector of attach is that my lady lives outside the United States. My response is so what? I took a look at the available women in the US, and they are a sorry lot. The pickings are slim to none.
I can’t remember what I have posted before but I decided early on that I have no interest in marrying someone that looks like my grandmother. That was a sound and good decision. Why? Because women in my age group that are single, by whatever reason, have zero interest in getting married again. All they want is to dote over grandchildren. They will not move one block further away from the grands and certainly not to another state to live with somebody like me. Leave and cleave is not part of their world.
This leaves younger women. I’m talking in this category of women plus or minus 40. I want the option of having more children so babes in their fifties are not on my radar, plus see comment above on grand kids.
Folks the amount of baggage that many of these broken women have is lethally toxic. Joint custody, student loans, careers, social activities, etc. They either don’t really want a husband or have so many restrictions that they impose on the relationship that it will never work. Many have their mortgage, car payment, and career and then want to add a husband in much the same way as they would add a wardrobe accessory. They are not serious about marriage, at least not as defined biblically. They are so poisoned with feminism and our consumer culture that they are unhealthy to be around. It is not unusual for a woman in this demographic to start their evaluation of a man’s fitness by the car that he drives and the man’s financial statement. They require that any man in their life be able to pull out his credit card and fix all their past mistakes. I’m not making this up.
Statistically, women in their thirties don’t want to get married. Less than half are even interested and that statistic may really be as low as 34 percent. And that doesn’t mean that the marriage minded 34 percent are actively looking. Our culture is over the cliff of demographic suicide. Why do you think Charle Kirk kept saying start a family? Have children.
Contributing to this abysmal condition in the church is the prevalence of the broken and failed evangelical theology of premillennial dispensationalism. Jesus is coming any second so why plan for the future? Most Christians don’t believe there is any future. It’s all gonna burn and we are just passing through. Just ask them. Why get married and have children if you believe the world will end any second. Yes, this doctrine is bullshit and heresy. I know adherents will complain about my analysis but it’s true and I can prove it. This is why eschatology is a primary issue not a secondary one.
I have spent months scouring Christian Singles websites, allegedly populated by marriage minded women, for any signs of someone wanting a serious relationship and came up empty. My criteria were simple and realistic, but detailed. Zero takers. I even pivoted from the United States to searching for single Christian women anywhere on the planet. I expanded my search into Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia.
Believe it or not, many of the Christian websites that I tried do not list the ages of the women or the ages of men that they would be interested in meeting. I had some nice chats with a few women between 25 and 31 but we agreed that they were too young for me. I thanked them for chatting, wished them happy hunting, and parted ways.
I decided more radical action was needed in order to be successful in my search. In August, I joined a site called Christian Filipina. Wow!
There’s an old story about someone asking a thief why he chose to rob banks. He replied, “because that’s where the money is.”
Christian Filipina is like the bank. It is chock full of real women that want to find husbands. In one day on Christian Filipina, I met more woman than I had on every other singles website I had tried combined. Of course, the cost of the website is one reason that it is so good, but I highly recommend it if you are serious about being marriage minded.
Because my lady is not from the United States, I am getting a ration of crap from some people. I’ve surveyed the dating screen in the United States and its really crappy.
Oh, lastly, NO. Since my wife died, zero people have suggested a single female for me to take a look at as a possible mate. Bye the way, I’m OK with that. I just wanted to mention that to make the point that people will gladly complain about my choices, but they really are not interested in helping me, they just want to bitch and criticize me only to put me down.
This brings up the other attack vector that people are using against me. These attacks are cruel, evil, and none of their f*cking business. This is the “you haven’t mourned enough for your dead wife” line of crap.
First, how the hell would you know?
Funny how these people tend to be married, with a currently living spouse, trying to tell me what I should do. They have never been through it but somehow are self-appointed experts in what I’m going through. They are totally inflexible. Their minds are made-up. Somehow, they know best.
I have zero respect for folks in this bucket. If you feel this way, please keep your mouth shut. By opening your pie hole, you make yourself a fool and I don’t want to be around people that feel this way about me or my wife ever again. Please just remove yourself from my life so I won’t have to do it later.
Look, I know people say stupid stuff to those suffering cancer or having lost someone to death. I know, I used to say stupid crap too, but I know better now. But the line, “you haven’t mourned enough” is out of line. Even if you feel that way, keep the opinion to yourself and don’t go repeating it to a widow or widower.
I knew for four years that my wife would die from her cancer. How f*cking long must I mourn?
I’ve been mourning since the day I heard the diagnosis and looked it up on Doctor Google.
I knew it both times that we worked on our last will and testament.
I knew it when we chose to move to Idaho.
I knew it when we watched my son graduated high school.
I knew it when we somehow were able to come up with the money to send my wife to sing at Carnegie Hall.
I knew it when we sat down at our last Valentine’s Day meal. We both knew that there would never be another.
I knew it when she was placed in hospice care.
I knew it when her dad and I watched her die.
Please don’t ever say I haven’t mourned enough. That is a lie, and I won’t have it said in my presence. If you really feel that way about me then please get the hell out of my life because I don’t need you in it.
I have some people that I thought cared about me that are gunning for me for stupid reasons. Please stop. If you can’t be happy that I have found love again then shut up and get out of my life. If you don’t then I will remove you from it myself.
Fifty Year Mortgages do not help Affordability
The fifty-year mortgage idea was floated by the Trump administration as a way to make home buying more affordable for the younger generations. While this may sound good on paper, it’s yet another way the older generation wants to saddle the younger ones with insurmountable debt. This is called “financial engineering” it’s the latest go to from the Baby Boomer generation that is entering the later stages of life… I mean power on this earthly plane.
You see, as things are currently, you have two options for a mortgage on a home, 15- and 30-year terms. Folks like Dave Ramsey and others rail against a 30-year loan, and he isn’t totally wrong. The problem is, we have a massive affordability crisis, as far as buying “your first home” is concerned. I say buy the place, if you can afford it, and you can always make extra payments toward your mortgage to build equity and own it quicker. Case in point, 10 years ago, I bought my first home, for $325,000. As of today, Zillow has it valued at $600,000. As you can see, starter homes are very expensive.
Enter the older generation. Having learned nothing from the financial crisis circa 2008, they now are floating a 50-year mortgage. This is the same group that floated and sold; interest only mortgages, negative amortization mortgages, NINJA (no income, no job, no asset) mortgages, and no down payment loans. This sunk the financial and credit markets so badly that banks needed federal government bailouts to stay in business. Foreclosures ran rampant and destroyed neighborhoods and cities. 15-17 years later we are not students of history, we just look for a new means to get to an end.
To be fair, this generation has been at it for a while now in regard to affordability. One thing William will tell you, I railed on the new 84-month car loan that replaced the 60-month car loan. This also had nothing to do with affordability. It was just a financial tool to get “you into that car you love so much.” It became not can you afford it, but how much can you pay monthly? We will adjust the dials in the finance department and make the numbers work. I do not know too many people who think it’s a smart idea to finance a vehicle for 7 years. Oh, check out what interest rate you will be paying, news flash it won’t be 0%.
Back to the 50-year mortgage, I ran some numbers, and it amounts to about a $300-400 savings per month in terms of a lower payment. This is based on a 30-year mortgage running about $2,600 which is common now. As you can see, the savings might help, but it comes with drawbacks. First, the interest rate will not be cheap as the bank will be holding the note for 50 years. Also, the age of the house will come into play. Buying that home built in 1960, it’ll be over 100 years old before the mortgage is 2/3 paid off! This carries significant risk for the bank as the asset could be falling into a state of disrepair. Also, you do not and will not build much equity over the life of that mortgage, so when you are looking to buy your bigger house, you won’t have much for a down payment. Just look at the amortization schedule. You will see the first 7-8 years is virtually all interest, not much toward principal.
The last thing to remember, the man pushing these mortgage ideas is none other than President Donald John Trump, a man who loves debt. Look it up, his corporation owes billions in loans. This is no shot at him, he made a ton of money in real estate, but he did it with the corporation holding the paper not himself. In this case, he is making you hold the debt personally. He has made zero attempts to cut the debt or deficit as President (this term or last), and a budget will never be a thing under him. He see’s things through the eyes of “as long as you can make the payment you are fine.” It’s the way his generation feels.
In closing, please think long and hard before you fall for these shenanigans put out by the older generation. The only thing they care about is wealth generation. The 90-day calendar types love it because this means home builders can sell more homes, banks can write more loans, and profits will go higher. They could care less about affordability; they prefer you locked into loan terms that won’t seem like a good move in a decade. This will not end well. I am happy there has been push-back on these mortgages. The truth is that some people will not be able to afford a home. You may not be able to afford that sports car, getting another credit card will not solve your problem. A class/seminar on budgeting/credit should be required.
Stop fleecing the younger generations. Be a student of history. We are entering a rough cycle in terms of affordability. Adding more years to the term is pointless. It’s time we grow-up as a country.
My Take on Gerryrigging I mean Gerrymandering
As an opening note, remember I am a Libertarian who votes with the Republicans, think of me as the opposite of Bernie Sanders who is a Socialist but votes Democrat.
Under the Constitution, we conduct a census every 10 years, meaning we count everyone in every; state, county, city etc. For the sake of this blog, I am not going to touch the “illegals were counted” argument. I am simply making a point about the lines drawn. Yes, I am aware and agree that certain states play “creative accounting” with the numbers. After the states finish the count, they send their figures to the feds. The total population then gets divided by 435 (the number of congressmembers) and a number of representatives for each state is determined. Let’s say 800,000 people. Then they take each state’s population and divide by that number and that is how many “districts” they get awarded. States that grow in population may/will gain seats, those who lose population or do not grow fast enough may/will lose seats. Each state is guaranteed 1 congressmember. Obviously for states that lose/gain, they must re-draw their district lines. This occurs once a decade. Some states have the state legislature draw them, others like California have an independent commission. These maps, when approved, go into place, typically for the election in years ending in “2,” for the next decade. Sometimes these maps are delayed by courts, or the voting rights act. Typically, this is due to racially altered districts, I’ll explain more below.
So, the Republicans in Texas, via Trump, decided to re-draw their lines for the upcoming election. While this is not specifically forbidden, they do not gain or lose seats, they just redraw the lines. They drew the new lines in such a way as to try to “gain” 5 Republican seats. The 90-day guy needed a new pair of man panties upon hearing this, it was the best news ever! They then moved on to Missouri redrawing the lines to obliterate the Democrat representing Kansas City. Ditto in North Carolina with a Democrat representing a “swing seat.” This is like shooting fish in a barrel, right? Then Comrade Newsom in California decided he would get in on the fun, and the voters passed an initiative to adopt new Democrat drawn lines, and suddenly it wasn’t so fun for Republicans. I will give Newsom credit, we have an “independent” commission, and he went to the voters and the voters approved a measure to override the commission and adopt new maps. I am not saying Its right, but it was the correct process. From what the interwebs are saying, Virginia, Maryland, and Illinois are kicking around the idea of re-doing their maps. Those would benefit the blue team. As a side note, Ohio was forced by the courts to re-draw their map, it appears the red team will gain a couple, Utah was required to re-draw theirs, blue team will gain one.

So, as you can see, we have bedlam.

The red team is angry that the blue team is doing it, the blue team is saying the red team started it. Truth is both couldn’t be more wrong. What the Founders had in mind were districts drawn so that regions/areas/cities/towns with the same needs get a representative who serves their interests. Think of it like this; if the Geater Sacramento area was in one district, the representatives could focus on; infrastructure, public transit, redevelopment funds, things bigger that more developed cities need. On the other hand, places way up north of Sacramento like Chico, Red Bluff, and the rural cities nearby have completely different needs; timber industry, farming, rural internet etc. My point is, what these maps did, was put the rural areas in with parts of the large cities, (both sides did this) to create districts the other side cannot win. For example, what do Santa Rosa and Sonoma have in common with Alturas and Chico? Outside of smoking weed, I’d say very little, but it now has 45% Democrat registration making it unwinnable for a Republican. This is a common theme both parties used, it’s been going on for years, but the pedal was pushed to the floor this go round. Also, both parties “shored up incumbents,” meaning they took members who may lose their seats and put people/areas containing large amounts of voters from the other team into a neighboring district. Think of it like this, as far as Northern California is concerned, if you remove some rural parts of Kevin Kiley’s district, and replace with a city like Rancho Cordova it could suddenly become unwinnable.
The other issue I have is that this sets a dangerous precedent going forward. How often will we be redrawing these seats? Let’s use this example. A congressperson from a former safe seat wins by only 4% due to shifting demographics. Do you re-draw the lines shifting parts of the closest “big city” out or draw in more of the “rural area or military base” in? To be clear, I am targeting both parties here. This would mean we become a banana republic, and sadly we are getting very close to being one.
What is my solution? Well, nothing is perfect, but I would start by saying cities should not be split up. For example, the City of Nashville should have representation from 1 person, not be “cut up” into four pieces and spread out making it impossible for a Democrat to win. Likewise in California, there should be 2 Republicans representing rural northern seats, not 2 Democrats representing Bay Area/Norcal hybrid seats. This actually gives representation. The idea here is the rep from a city will argue for certain things and against others, also bringing perspective from city life, the rural rep will do the opposite. This is healthy. By carving up Nashville or putting Bay Area cities in with northern rural areas, they do not get a voice. Frankly there is no point in even visiting there.
As far as competitiveness goes, I doubt many seats will be competitive but at least the maps would create actual representation. The other point here is states would likely be sending a coalition of representatives that looks like their states voting demographics. I mean shouldn’t CA be sending about 38% of its representation as Republicans? Ditto in Texas for Democrats? The way the lines are currently being drawn creates an out of whack representation demographic. Does anyone think North Carolina, a literal toss up state in presidential elections should send 11 Republicans in a 14 seat delegation?
With all the talk of rigged elections, doesn’t this actually seem like rigging an election? Creating a district your guy cannot lose? Or even being remotely challenged?
SNAP/EBT Benefit/Fraud/Use Explained
During the government shutdown you heard a lot about SNAP/EBT/CAL Fresh benefits. I will explain the propaganda both sides were using. 90% of it is not true, 100% of it was deplorable. I will explain the program and the amount of “fraud” taking place. If you are reasonable, you will learn something, if you are far right or left, you will not; feel free to quite reading if you fit into the latter categories.
- Understanding what SNAP is. It is a supplement. People on SNAP are what I refer to as the “working poor.” They are folks working 12-15 hour days, possibly even 7 days a week, because the jobs they have pay minimum wage. They do this because their primary job doesn’t give them 8 hours a day or 30 hours a week to be eligible for benefits. These folks have their money run out around the 20th or so of each month. Sure, there are disabled folks on here to who cannot work.
- What you can use SNAP on. It’s essentially groceries and fast food. It will not work on alcohol and some prepared foods.As a result, you see the person in line having to swipe the card numerous times, and likely remove items that aren’t eligible for SNAP from their cart because the system will not take payment.
- How much is the benefit? It’s about $188 a month. Again, the point of this program is a “supplement” not a living benefit, think of it as “something extra.” Look at that figure again. Folks, it’s $188. Recipients getting this aren’t going out to dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. If you live in the real world, the folks on SNAP, as Dave Ramsey says “are only seeing the inside of a restaurant if they are working there.”
As you can see above, this program isn’t one that folks are getting rich off of, it’s just a way to put food on the table during the latter part of the month. No one is living high on the hog here.
I will now refute the criticisms the uninformed on both sides of the aisle spew about this program.
- It’s rampant with fraud. This is flat-out, not true. First the benefit is so small that it’s barely worth the time to apply if you are doing it for nefarious reasons. I am sure your household income is verified, either via the IRS or State Tax Board so it would be pretty easy to catch the liars. If someone is working for cash or under the table, I am not sure how to catch those types, but it’s a small number. Now in regard to the folks selling their benefit card for cash to purchase drugs or alcohol, I am not sure how you stop that, but again that isn’t a large part of the program. Again, I just do not see a lot of people fraudulently being on this government program.
- These people did it to themselves. In some cases, yes, I will concede that point, having a felony on your record severely limits the jobs you can have. Not finishing high school also will limit you, as is the case with having children out of wedlock. However those people are the exception, the rule is what I am talking about. Most of these recipients are working multiple jobs and are barely able to tread water. This is due to C-suite types not wanting to pay a living wage to folks and cutting hours to not allow benefits to be offered.
- All they buy is junk food with it. This is mostly true unfortunately. Again, what we are dealing with here are folks with very little work skills, working for very little pay. Also, due to their schedule, they may not be able to cook or know how to cook. In that case buying, chips, cookies, cereal, frozen dinners, and soda is what they do. They can stretch these items out, I guess. Yes, this food is bad for you healthwise, but it does no one any good giving people who can’t cook; beans, rice and flour. It’s a deeply systemic problem that has been allowed to grow out of control.
- Illegals are getting benefits in large numbers. This isn’t true. Why would you sign up for a program and call attention to yourself, especially with the current group in the White House. Let’s all agree on something, it isn’t illegals pulling off the fraud.
- Not paying them during the shutdown will teach them a lesson. I heard this from a couple Republicans. Anyone else need proof that taking God out of our lives was a bad thing? Starving people to teach them a lesson? What is the matter with you. This is actually worse because the true “hunter/gatherer” mentality comes out and folks start doing drastic things to feed their families.
- Can’t food banks take care of it? Nope. The truth is they can barely handle their current caseload; this just made the issue worse.
As you can see from the above, I am making light of the fraud, and what these folks buy. The questions being asked and statements made are a problem. We should be asking how are 42 million Americans on this program? That’s a ton! How DID this happen? We can talk about fixing this but I feel we are too far gone. Where do you start when 42 million people are on it? RFK Jr., for all his faults, is onto something about limiting the types of foods folks can buy with these benefit cards. I do not think they should be accepted at fast food places either but again the bulk of these folks can’t cook, or their schedule doesn’t allow them the time. It’s a chicken or the egg type argument.
If we want to be real about the program, I think those of us that are reasonable would agree, 7/10 of these folks do have a need to be on the program and receive the benefits. They as stated work multiple jobs, weird hours, and just cannot get ahead. 1/10 are likely fraudsters, but how do you catch them? As detailed above, it’s pretty hard to catch the person selling their card for cash at the local park/street corner. This is also likely a number higher than is reality. The remaining 2/10 are where the real problem lies. These are folks who are clueless as opposed to the 7/10 who are helpless. These people put themselves into this situation by having a deserved criminal record, having kids when they cannot afford them, and other poor choices. These are the folks we need to stop assisting. They likely spend countless hours watching the tv on the couch and intentionally not picking up more hours at their job because they are lazy. Frankly put, we help out way too many clueless folks in this country, we are bankrupting ourselves as a result. This is the group DOGE should have targeted.

Editor’s Note: One issue that is not refuted in the above is stolen identities and organized crime. I suspect the bulk of fraud is via this mechanism. In my experience, government is ill equipped to deal with fraud as the presumption of any government program is that the applicant is eligible.
Republican Women Gone Wild
Folks, two Republican woman had pretty bad incidents this past 10 days. Embarrassing actually, and no I’m not talking about wardrobe malfunctions or scandalous meltdowns.

Blogger note: It will be interesting to see if William believes the same as me on these two pieces of work. To set the scene for the blog I am a religious person who does not watch porn, nor frequent strip clubs, or take part in other vices such as gambling.

Number 1 Republican gone wild: Nancy Mace had a meltdown as TSA officers escorted her to the gate at an airport.
The profane incident at the Charleston International Airport threatens to derail her run as she said she would sue the airport authority for defamation and false reporting.
An initial incident report from the Charleston county aviation authority police department first obtained by Wired describes Mace cursing at airport staff, saying that this was no way to treat a “f—ing US representative”. She invoked the name of South Carolina senator Tim Scott, saying that the Republican lawmaker would not be treated as she was, according to the report.
Mace had this to say: “I’m not going to be the next person shot and killed in cold blood,” Mace said. “Last Thursday morning, I absolutely, 100% confronted the airport employees who put my safety at risk. Did I drop an F-bomb? I hope I did. Did I call them incompetent? If I didn’t, they absolutely earned it.” Mace claimed that she “personally had more than two dozen security breaches” at the airport.

TSA agents right now and during the incident in question are working without pay. Sure, they will get backpay when the shutdown ends, but contrast that with Mace who IS being paid during the shutdown. Mace is running for governor, and this will likely be beginning of the end for her hopefully.
Mace also brought us this viral moment earlier.
“When I woke up this morning at 7 — I was getting picked up at 7:45 — Patrick, my fiancé, tried to pull me by my waist over this morning in bed,” Mace recounted Wednesday with a smile at the breakfast hosted by GOP presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) in the Palmetto State.
“And I was like, ‘No, baby, we don’t got time for that this morning,’” Mace said she told her future spouse, Patrick Bryant. The pair got engaged last year.
“I gotta get to the prayer breakfast,” Mace told the crowd. “And I gotta be on time,” the 45-year-old lawmaker said, before adding, “A little TMI.”
“He can wait. I’ll see him later tonight.”
Yeah, she shared that at the prayer breakfast.
Oh, and that fiancé she passed on sex with? She later accused him of sexual assault. He is countersuing saying it was made up. Who do you believe?
The ex-fiancé of Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., filed a lawsuit this week claiming that she fabricated sexual assault allegations against him in a scheme she allegedly manufactured with a friend’s estranged wife, reports said.
The lawsuit filed by Patrick Bryant on Thursday claims allegations made against him in a May lawsuit from a “Jane Doe” were false, according to WCSC. The outlet reported that the original lawsuit claimed Doe was assaulted in 2018 at the home of Eric Bowman by another man and that he and Bryant filmed it — an alleged incident that Mace referenced during a speech on the House floor in Washington, D.C., earlier this year.
Republican gone wild number 2: Lauren Boebert
Rep. Lauren Boebert and her boyfriend Kyle Pearcy, a real estate broker from Windsor, Colo., attended a Halloween party in Loveland, Colo., on Friday night, in costumes portraying a Mexican woman and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, photos obtained by ABC News show.
The congresswoman was dressed in a traditional Mexican dress and wore a sombrero while Pearcy wore an ICE vest over fatigues.
A chalkboard sign that appeared in other photos from a separate public event the couple attended the same night which are widely circulating online was slung on the back of a chair and is out of the frame in the pictures, according to a party guest who spoke to ABC News.
The text on the sign, which appears to be joke mocking the pronunciation of “you see” said “Mexican Word of the day: JUICY. Tell me if Juicy ICE coming.”
Blogger note: The Mexican word of the day is an internet meme that went viral for a while, its offensive making fun of Mexican speech, but it was a copycat move here. Not original writing.

Ok, I have a real problem with this. It was a Halloween party of what seemed like a community gathering. As in a public type of setting. This is the thing about Boebert, she doesn’t know how to read the room or understand that sometimes going viral is stupid and dumb. The costume is a great display of someone not having an IQ higher than the temperature of the room. There were obviously quite a few that found this offensive, she was photographed and it went viral online for the wrong reasons. Wearing a traditional Mexican dress and having an ICE agent escort you as your date is plain tone deaf as a member of Congress. This would likely get my approval if it was a party of staff and other employees, maybe even fellow Republicans, but not a public event. Let’s just be honest, the costumes are offensive to at least half the country, it’s a bad look.
Of course, the 90-day guy laughed like a hyena and said come on she is expressing herself. “She is showing her ass, not literally, but figuratively” I responded. His laughter makes perfect sense; he is a man who views TV as the real world. He lives in fantasy, not reality. I guarantee he would not be laughing or approving if in front of other people. He tells jokes of men having sex with sheep, goats and donkeys so it’s clear what he finds normal.
Oh, Boebert is also famous for her other excursions such as the documented “date” at the movie theatre where she was giving her date a hand job and allowing him to fondle her breast. Behavior that was caught on security cameras. Oh, said “date” was a well-known Democrat handler.

In closing, the point of this blog is not to attack Republicans, it is to call out bad behavior by electeds. We would be doing the same if they were Democrats. The reason we spotlight this behavior is they, like professional athletes, are supposed to be role models. These two are anything but. In the case of Boebert, it’s time to grow up. You are blessed with being very attractive, but that isn’t a pass. She plays to the hard right, “podcast bros” and the whack jobs. There are lots of illegally here; Mexican laborers and workers who work jobs we do not want to do. Bottom line, it’s offensive and a very bad look. In the case of Mace, it’s time for her to go as well. She made the crude comments about her fiancé and wanting to have sex prior to a prayer breakfast, then accused him of sexual assault. She seems to have fallen into “Law and Order SVU culture” as I call it, cry rape or sexual assault and you are guilty until proven innocent. Its conduct unbecoming. My father used to tell me Republicans do not do things like that. It’s time to return to that philosophy, as this is not a winning or good look.

PS Mace had another meltdown after I finished this blog, seems like the sexual assault is now rape. She looks like a soon to be former elected official.
“What kind of guy sues his own rape victim and sues women he filmed without their knowledge, permission or consent for YEARS? Who does that?” Mace posted Friday morning. “Can’t wait for a court hearing on this!!! Put me in coach—I’m ready to testify, under oath—this guy should be rotting in a jail cell—not suing his victims!!!
“HOLD THE LINE,” she added.
Prop 50 in CA is going to Pass? Blame the GOP
There is another election on Tuesday, next week or this week pending the publishment of this blog. The editor is on sabbatical out of the country; we pray his Visa or Passport paperwork is in order.
CA is voting on a Proposition 50, which they labeled Stop the Trump Gerrymander or something like that. It’s funny, the ballot is quite literally 2/3 of a page. We out here, on the Left Coast, are used to ballots being about 5 pages. Simply put, this measure will re-draw our congressional maps and basically elect 5 more Democrats to Congress in November of NEXT year.
So why do I blame the GOP you ask? Simple, I’ll lay it out in bullet point form with my thoughts.
- Trump is the anti-Christ in California. Anything he does, we hate it; or at least a very large majority hate it. Clever on Newsom and Bonta for drawing the legal language as an “anti-Trump” move.
- Using very bad surrogates on the campaign. Kevin McCarthy and former Governor Arnold Schwarzengger, two very unpopular ex-politicians, who rank low in respectability among GOP Voters, are somehow the voice of reason? Worse, these guys lack any credibility with the voting majority in California. Seriously folks, who thought putting up a Governor who essentially became a Democrat and a very, very moderate former Speaker as the face of the opposition would be a smart thing? If the CAGOP and CRA hate them (to their credit btw), what do you think the rest of the voters think?
- Voter apathy never happened. Elections, especially special ones, have a very, very muted turnout. Typically, it’s just hyper-partisan voters. The hyper-partisan ones on the Right come nowhere near the level of the ones on the Left.
- Trump cannot and will not get out of his own way. First, I do not understand the need to redistrict Texas, but I digress. This thing would have died out (Prop 50) had he just moved on, instead they moved on to North Carolina, Missouri, and now Indiana, and possibly Florida are going to redraw. Keeping this issue in the news just further enrages the anti-Trump voter.
- Touching on the point above, the opposition has centered on “its illegal.” While that may be true in California, it’s also unconstitutional in the other states where the GOP did it. The argument sounds like one child taunting another, “I can do it, but you can’t.” Its poor messaging and actually energizes the other side more wanting to vote.
- CA GOP Leader, James Gallagher, is another problem. He proposed a 2-state solution. I heard and read about this and thought “is this Jimmy Carter in disguise?” Really, he is comparing California to Israel and Gaza? When they were in the midst of an actual war? No way would that ever work.
- The shutdown isn’t helping. It doesn’t matter whose fault the shutdown in Washington DC is blamed on. Again, Trump is not popular here. The proposition is framed to voters as a way to stop Trump. See my point?
So, in closing, I’m thinking a result of around 58-42 or so in favor. There are just way too many Democrats and anti-Trump folks out here. Things may have been different if the above were not true, but I doubt it. I do not understand why any of this is actually necessary. President Trump has used Congress for only the “Big Beautiful Bill” as far as I know. It seems weird to go all in on this when he doesn’t actually seem to need anything to get passed by Congress.

The NBA Suffers Another Gambling Scandal
Thursday October 23rd, the year of our lord 2025, the FBI arrested a current NBA head coach Chauncey Billups, a current player Terry Rozier, and a former player Damon Jones. Also arrested were 31 others who included members of four New York Organized crime families. More on this in a moment, first some league history on this.
Tim Donaghy was a former NBA official he resigned in July 2007 after the FBI put out a report, he bet on games which HE OFFICIATED. Donaghy even admitted to making calls to satisfy the point spread, allowing essentially a manufactured outcome. Donaghy admitted when pleading guilty to betting on games during the 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2006-2007 seasons. Yep. He served 15 months in prison. To show how big of a f**k up Donaghy is, he got released 5 months early, violated his release terms and was SENT BACK TO PRISON. Donaghy has a laundry list of other transgressions such as cheating on the SAT exam, but it’s not relevant here.
Last year reserve guard for Toronto, Johntay Porter, was banned for life for disclosing information to gamblers regarding his own stats, aka prop bets. In essence Porter told folks to bet on him to score fewer points than “Vegas” predicted because he was going to fake an injury. Porter seldom played, so on the occasions he did intentionally do this, it was easy to track the large amounts of bets that “won” compared to the very small amounts of normal bets on him.
Also last year, Terry Rozier was named as being under investigation to do with gambling. Rozier is named above. The NBA cleared him of any wrongdoing in January of 2024. Rozier played a game the night before he was arrested by the FBI. Why was he cleared?
Malik Beasley is a very good player, formerly of the Detroit Pistons, he was named as being under investigation by the NBA at the same time and for the same thing as Rozier. He was cleared as well by the NBA of any wrongdoing. He remains a free agent. Beasley is 28, and as was announced yesterday, has not been cleared by the FBI.
In the case of Rozier and Beasley why did the NBA clear them?
Because the NBA doesn’t care about you the fan or the betters, they only care about $$$. The stench of the Donaghy scandal got me to quit watching the NBA. Rigged and fixed games do not sit well with me. There once was a time when my parents used to have to pull me away from the game to eat dinner. The NBA lost me, and a colleague of mine… both of us agree those games are rigged. Of course, the 90-day guy still watches nightly. He doesn’t care because he thinks its on the up and up.
In this case Rozier, Jones, and Billups are accused of insider sports betting, think like members of Congress doing insider trading. Billups is accused of quite literally passing on to organized crime members that he was going to “tank” or throw a game by sitting his best players moments before a game. Damon Jones is accused of passing on inside information that a player, which appears to be Lebron James, would be sitting out due to injury minutes before a game, hence the Lakers would very likely lose. He did it again as well regarding another star player on the Lakers, Anthony Davis.
Blogger note: Neither Lebron James nor Anthony Davis are implicated or arrested. They did nothing wrong.
Rozier took himself out of the game, also known as faking an injury. This is alleged to have happened more than once and like Porter, there was heavy betting action on Rozier not scoring a certain number of points, Rozier, unlike Porter, was a very high paid star player.
Reality will soon set in for these three, they will be trading in their celebrity lifestyles for prison garb sometime in the future. None will play/coach again. Check out what they are accused of, and some of the proof the prosecutors have in the form of text messages. This is no witch hunt.
Folks, the late NBA commissioner David J Stern said it best when it came to legalizing sports betting in New Jersey.
- Criticized New Jersey’s motives: He stated that New Jersey “has no idea what it’s doing and doesn’t care at all because all it’s interested in is making a buck or two”.
- Warned of irreparable harm: Stern testified that sports gambling “threatens to harm irreparably” the NBA’s relationship with its fanbase. He feared that legalized betting could shift fan focus from the teams to the betting lines.
- Challenged Governor Christie: He took a personal shot at then-Governor Chris Christie, a former U.S. Attorney, for attacking a federal law prohibiting sports betting.
- Joined leagues’ lawsuit: The NBA, NFL, MLB, and NCAA, with Stern as a lead voice, filed a lawsuit that successfully stopped New Jersey’s initial 2012 attempt to legalize sports betting.
To be clear, and in full transparency, Stern did change his tune circa 2015 after he retired as commissioner.
The league’s current commissioner, I mean stooge Adam Silver, has always embraced gambling on sports, even online and electronically. Ever since 2018 when the Supreme Court ruled on this leaving it up to the states, the NBA has been sponsored by FanDuel and Draft Kings, among others. My understanding is there are a plethora of online sports books who run ads during the games. Understand gambling is still illegal in several states including the legacy office location of this blog.
The online part I have an issue with, and my biggest concern, is how can one verify an identity or address of someone online? Hell, the Troll is completely anonymous! What stops me from gambling, and claiming my address is in Indiana? No one cares if I lose, but what if I win a big one? I have a feeling that a ton of players are gambling online under an alias or pseudonym. Make it so you must bet in person.
Folks, the only way the league learns is when gambling totally hurts the league’s image. Sadly, that doesn’t happen when large numbers of people continue to watch and attend as if nothing happened. As demonstrated above, this is no one off, it’s a major issue and will only get worse. Check out the gambling by players going on at the collegiate level!
Oh, look worse Tim Donaghy got to weigh in on this issue…
“I think this is just the tip of the iceberg, like you said earlier,” Donaghy told Chris Cuomo on his show “Cuomo” on The Hill’s sister network NewsNation.
“I think maybe you’re going to see a bigger scandal coming out of the college level because you have these young athletes that aren’t going to make it to the next level,” Donaghy said. “Somebody’s going to offer them money to maybe fix a game.”
These athletes take the money “because they’re going to need a way to support their families,” the former referee continued.
Nope. Sorry Tim, you were the tip of the iceberg. You walked so these guys could run.

Sports gambling suspensions for pro athletes are on the rise

Today’s sports rigging and gambling indictments — which included arrests of an active NBA player and head coach — mark the latest in a slate of professional athletes and coaches facing gambling investigations.
Since the Supreme Court declared bans on sports gambling unconstitutional in 2018, at least 23 professional players or coaches have been suspended or permanently banned from their leagues for sports betting violations.
While no major-league professional athletes have faced gambling-related disciplinary suspensions or bans yet this year, Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz have been on paid leave since July due to an MLB probe of sports betting.
The NBA says Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trailblazers coach Chauncey Billups have been placed on leave after their arrests this morning.

What we learned from the indictments about the alleged gambling schemes involving NBA players and the mafia

Rigged poker games, insider sports betting and mafia ties. And no, it’s not a new Hollywood movie — these are elements of alleged illegal gambling schemes laid out in two indictments today, following a years-long investigation.
Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, Chauncey Billups, were arrested in connection to the probe. Their initial court hearings will happen later today. A third NBA figure, former player Damon Jones, is also being charged in the investigation, officials said.
Here’s what we know about the dual operations — one centered on an underground poker ring and the other on fixed sports betting on NBA games — from officials and the indictments:
Poker games:
- Top lines: The defendants, including members and associates of the Bonanno, Gambino and Genovese New York crime families, are accused of using cheating technology to steal millions from victims during rigged poker games in Manhattan and other parts of the state.
- Who was involved: Organizers enlisted NBA figures — including Billups — to sit at the table and help make the games appear legitimate to victims, according to law enforcement.
- How it unfolded: The defendants used a shuffling machine to count the cards and predict who had the best hand, prosecutors allege. That information was then transmitted to someone sitting at the table who used signals to communicate it with others in on the scheme. They also used decoy cell phones and marked cards that could only be seen with special glasses, the indictment says.
- The financial losses: It is estimated the victims lost more than $7 million in the games since 2019, according to the indictment. One particular victim losing $1.8 million in total, documents say.
- Additional allegations: The scheme went beyond just fixing poker games and involved violence, including robberies, the indictment says. The defendants are also accused of laundering money using shell companies and cryptocurrency, documents show.
Sports betting:
- What happened: Defendants named in this indictment are accused of exploiting insider information to bet on NBA games, US Attorney Joe Nocella said. The nature of this information included things like when players would be sitting out and when they would pull themselves out of a game due to injury, he said.
- How the scheme worked: The player information would be passed a long to other members of the scheme, who would wager money, documents say, mostly on individual player performances and statistics. Noecella said it involved the performance of players on several teams, including the Charlotte Hornets, the Portland Trail Blazers and the Los Angeles Lakers.
- Injury reports: In one instance, the indictment details how Rozier allegedly faked an injury in 2023. He told another person involved that he was going to leave the game early, allowing members of the group to bet on the “under” of his statistics, as outlined in the indictment. In another example, Jones is accused of leaking information about LeBron James’ injury to bettors, according to court documents.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups has been placed on leave.

The Portland Trail Blazers say Tiago Splitter will take over head coaching duties after Chauncey Billups was placed on leave following his arrest this morning.
“We are aware of the allegations involving head coach Chauncey Billups, and the Trail Blazers are fully cooperating with the investigation. Billups has been placed on immediate leave, and Tiago Splitter will assume head coaching duties in the interim. Any further questions should be directed to the NBA,” the Blazers said in a statement.
Billups has been the coach in Portland since 2021.
CNN has also contacted the Miami Heat, which declined to comment separately on the arrest of guard Terry Rozier and directed CNN to the NBA’s statement on the investigation. Rozier has also been placed on leave, according to the league.

The US Justice Department laid out in detail this morning how several NBA players and coaches, including Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, allegedly used non-public information about upcoming NBA games to allow others to profit on betting.
These are the relevant games listed by the Justice Department in a news release:
March 23, 2023 — Charlotte Hornets vs. New Orleans Pelicans
Rozier allegedly tipped off longtime friend Deniro Laster that he planned to leave the game early due to a supposed injury. He then left the game after 9 minutes, “generating tens of thousands of dollars in profits,” according to the DOJ.
March 24, 2023 — Portland Trail Blazers vs. Chicago Bulls
Defendant Eric Earnest allegedly “received, and then passed on, insider information from a longtime friend, an NBA coach at the time, that several of the Blazers’ top players would sit out a game against the Chicago Bulls,” the DOJ said.
April 6, 2023 — Orlando Magic vs. Cleveland Cavaliers
A co-conspirator allegedly “leveraged a relationship” with a Magic player to learn that several of the team’s top players would sit out a game against the Cavaliers, the DOJ said.
February 9, 2023 — Los Angeles Lakers vs. Milwaukee Bucks and January 15, 2024 — Los Angeles Lakers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder
Former NBA player Damon Jones allegedly “shared and sold insider information on numerous occasions about undisclosed information relating to NBA games, such as lineup decisions and pre-release medical information, to his co-conspirators,” according to the DOJ. One of these exchanges came ahead of a game in which superstar LeBron James did not play.
January 26, 2024 — Toronto Raptors vs. Los Angeles Clippers and March 20, 2024 — Toronto Raptors vs. Sacramento Kings
Former Raptors player Jontay Porter allegedly told connections that “he would prematurely exit the games” due to supposed injuries, the DOJ said.
How does that make you feel folks? You bet on games that had a predetermined outcome! This stuff is as fake as that WWE wrestling BS. It’s all scripted. But hey, do not listen to me, keep paying $300 a month for cable to watch rigged games.

PS, the NBA also has a long history of their draft “lottery” having very odd outcomes in favor of preferred markets. It’s held behind closed doors in what appears to be a smoke filled room.
PSS I know the arrests had to do with 2 types of crimes involving organized crime. I care about the inside information. I don’t give a great God about a rigged poker game in the basement of mafia/mob/wannabe/crime family types. If you are stupid enough to go to a poker game in a basement or house of a bunch of randoms, you deserve to lose all your money.
